چکیده

Background Heart failure (HF) is a pathological condition during which the pump function of the heart is compromised. There are two major forms: diastolic and systolic HF. Whilst the majority of patients exhibit systolic HF (reduced ejection fraction), diastolic HF (normal ejection fraction) has also been found in almost half of HF patients. A major question in this field is the inter-relationship between diastolic and systolic HF. The mechanisms underlying both pathologies are still poorly understood.

Patient-specific electromechanical models of the heart for the prediction of pacing acute effects in CRT: A preliminary clinical validation

Cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) is an effective treatment for patients with congestive heart failure and a wide QRS complex. However, up to 30% of patients are non-responders to therapy in terms of exercise capacity or left ventricular reverse remodelling. A number of controversies still remain surrounding patient selection, targeted lead implantation and optimisation of this important ...

Quantifying passive myocardial stiffness and wall stress in heart failure patients using personalized ventricular mechanics

Background Heart failure (HF) patients present with a spectrum of phenotypes, including preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and reduced EF (HFrEF). The underlying mechanisms of HFpEF and HFrEF may be related to mechanical factors such as stiffness and stress. This study aimed to quantify passive mechanical properties in HFrEF and HFpEF patients using personalised left ventricular (LV) biomechan...

Cardiac Catheterization in Mice to Measure the Pressure Volume Relationship: Investigating the Bowditch Effect.

Animal models that mimic human cardiac disorders have been created to test potential therapeutic strategies. A key component to evaluating these strategies is to examine their effects on heart function. There are several techniques to measure in vivo cardiac mechanics (e.g., echocardiography, pressure/volume relations, etc.). Compared to echocardiography, real-time left ventricular (LV) pressur...

Coupled Personalisation of Cardiac Electrophysiology Models for Prediction of Ischemic Ventricular Tachycardia

In order to translate the important progress in cardiac electrophysiology modelling of the last decades into clinical applications, there is a requirement to make macroscopic models that can be used for the planning and performance of the clinical procedures. This requires model personalisation i.e. estimation of patient-specific model parameters and computations compatible with clinical constr...

Biophysical mechanisms of cardiac looping.

During early embryogenesis, the heart is a single, relatively straight tube which bends and twists (loops) rightward to create the basic plan of the mature heart. Despite intensive study for many decades, the biophysical mechanisms which drive and regulate cardiac looping have remained poorly understood. This review discusses, from a historical perspective, studies of looping mechanics and vari...
